Campaign Supernova

Critical Evaluation: *** out of ****

Campaign Supernova at Second City

"Campaign Supernova" at Second City starring Amanda Blake Davis, Tom Flanigan, Megan Grano, Laura Grey, Timothy Edward Mason, and Andy St. Clair.

"Campaign Supernova! Or How Many Democrats Does it Take to Lose an Election?" takes, as one might imagine from the title alone, typically serious and important topics of change and politics and twists it into an entertaining and very funny performance with an underlying message.  Any person could come see this show and relate to it and/or be entertained.  You don't have to be a theater buff to enjoy it but also if you are, you'll appreciate the energy and creativity of the actors in this show.

This talented ensemble cast presents in an almost Saturday Night Live-type of format short excerpts of material written by the same funny actors that you see on stage.  The show is of course held together with a common and appropriate theme of  political change needed in our country this election season that once again pops up in the Chicago theater scene.  The cast explores and pokes fun of in a witty way everything from singing about Florida not screwing the current election up again to the ever entertaining vocal stylings of your local Potbelly performer.

At first, a lot of Chicago inside jokes were taken and put into a funny scenario that started to bore me only because I thought that was where the whole show was headed. It felt like it could have gotten real old, real quick.  But, as the show went on, I was pleasantly surprised and taken aback by the wide range of topics that they creatively intertwined together to show us as Americans how our behavior needs to be tweaked for the better.  They used audience participation and had an amazing ability to keep the audience engaged when the unexpected happenings do happen on a live stage.

However, the second act fell short of my eventual high expectations and I felt the show could have ended on a better note with the first act.  That coupled with the fact of a bit of a flat ending comically speaking, though hopeful and noble made me want to leave even after the cast offered up an improvised third act that I did not stay for.  Other than that, I did enjoy it on a whole and this show makes for a refreshing social choice on a Friday or Saturday night for all ages and political backgrounds.

"Campaign Supernova" is about 2 hours in length with one 15 minute intermission.  Tickets for “Campaign Supernova! or How Many Democrats Does it Take to Lose an Election?” are available by phone at 312-337-3992 or on-line at www.secondcity.com. After high school, she attended and studied musical theater at Florida State University, Florida Southern College, American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, and is currently enrolled at Columbia College here in Chicago to complete her Bachelor's degree.  She also had the pleasure of studying with Michael Pieper at Second City, a talented and colorful director.  She moved to Chicago two years ago and loves it!  Meghan has had experience with creative and analytical writing most recently when reviewing "Massacre" at the Goodman Theatre this past spring for class.

Upon graduating from Columbia, Meghan plans to pursue a professional career as an actress on stage and film and is excited at the great opportunities Chicago offers to all of the arts professionally.   She is grateful for the opportunity to work with Steadstyle and see some of the world's best actors perform here in Chicago.  She also looks forward to not only experiencing the performances but becoming educated as she is a budding actress herself!
